For a number of reasons, not the least an avalanche of new and previously unknown material, the contents of Volume 5 had to be amended and now includes the last of the English tramways from St. Helens to Wolverton, Alan Brotchie’s incomparable “Steam Tram in Scotland” containing much hitherto unseen information, written in a scholastic but easy manner, plus the stories of three Welsh tramways. Uniquely we include a good look at some of the experimental systems where steam trams were essayed, and apart from the National Rifle Association, abandoned. Those ‘hen’s teeth’ – the Bradley cars of the Isle of Wight’s Ryde Pier – are not only written about, but thanks to the efforts of Nick Kelly, illustrated.
