Volume 4 is yet another example of trying to place a quart of liquor in a pint pot (if you must, 1.136 litres in just half that). It contains seven steam tramways from the tangled story of the Manchester, Bury, Rochdale and Oldham Company to the Staffordshire Tramways Company (better known as the South Staffs. and Birmingham Districts lines), and in addition a bonus chapter including such gems as fare dodging techniques, The Brakes (or, gloomily, lack of) on a tram, Transport for the Labouring Classes, the story of one contractor, the Tramways & General Works company (and a sideways look at others). And then, as a pièce de résistance, a set of specifications for building a new tramway.
