PLEASE NOTE THAT INTERNET EXPLORER DOESN’T DISPLAY ITEM NUMBERS OVER 999 CORRECTLY. The 1,000’s integer is missing. Firefox and Google Chrome get it right.

I am hoping that next month the following four new titles will be available:

1. Treatise upon Cable or Rope traction, by J.Bucknall Smith plus some other literature on that subject, being Cable Railway Co’s System of Traction Railways for Cities and Towns, 1881; Wire-Rope Street Railroads in San Francisco and Chicago, W. Morris, 1883; Cable Tramways, W. Colam, 1885; Patent Specification, Winbys’ Improvements in Cable Tramways, 1887; Edinburgh Northern Cable Tramways, W. Colam, 1890; The Cable System of Tramway Traction, 1896, and Conversion of Edinburgh, Leith and Portobello Horse Tramways Systems into Cable Traction, W. Colam, 1898, 434pp., all reprints, card covers, limited print run of 150.

2. Electric Railway Dictionary, definitions and illustrations of the parts and equipment of electric railway cars and trucks, R. Hitt, reprint of 1911 publication, which was compiled under the direction of a Committee appointed by the American Electric Railway Association;  there are nearly 2000 figures including numerous very detailed scale drawings, + 54pp of advertisements, total pagination = 350; hardbacked in buckram.  I searched for an original of this for many years, and know of only 1 US reprint [of 1972]; limited print run of 125.

3. Electric Tramway Traction by A. Greatorex (Borough Engineer and Surveyor, West Bromwich),  reprint of 1900 original, 92pp, hardbacked in buckram; this again is extremely scarce and my original is the only one I have ever seen, and I know of no reprint having been made; limited print run of 125

4. The final, 1,008-page volume (7) of A History of the British Steam Tram, which includes a complete reprint of Some Remarks on Working Street Tramway Lines by Steam Power with Description of Various Engines, by Leonard J. Todd, May 1874, 18pp of text and 9pp of hand-coloured illustrations, for the original of which I paid a huge sum!   Sections include: Steam tramways, by J.Hall; Arbitration; British Electric Traction Co; Acts of Parliament; Birmingham’s Public Works Dept and their Tramways; Board of Trade Returns; Cruelty to Horses; Experimentals; Foreign Tramways; Locomotive Manufacturers; Mr. Foot’s new Car Works at Preston; Rolling Stock fittings; Patents; Tangled webs (includes Carruthers Wain saga and O’Hagan’s exploits); Permanent Way; Tickets and Timetables; Statistics; Traction in Transition (which includes much on Birmingham); and Select Committee minutes of evidence (which I have found to be one of the most fascinating of all parts of the history); with the pagination of 1,008 it should be of no surprise that the cover price will be rather high.  Hardbacked as the others, and a limited print run of 400.

In the pipeline: the long-awaited history of the exploits of John Barraclough Fell, by Keith Pearson; a history of Kingston-upon-Hull Tramways by Malcolm Wells; a history of transport in Belfast by Mike Maybin, and a few more surprises!

New customers: please note that I always try and note serious defects, but not blemishes like inscriptions, odd handwritten notes, slight creasing/grubbiness/tears, dust spots, or rusty staples. Inevitably dustwrappers (d/w) are often worn at the edges. Also folded maps often have small tears at the folds, but again, I will note any more serious tears.  Postage is extra at cost, and there is no packing charge for second-hand material.   This list only represents a fraction of my stocks - please enquire about other titles.

Measurements I give for posters, plans, photographs etc. are approximate.

Abbreviations: dw = dustwrapper, pp = pages, pb or sb = paperback, hb = hardback, inc = includes.

Finally: If anyone is considering disposing of some or all of their collections, then distance is no object – I have an agent, John Wiltshire, tel: 01295 816963, in the south, near Banbury, who can travel to calls in England, while I can cover Scotland.
